      Understanding Pure Clear’s Filtration Technology

If you’re looking for a way to enjoy smarter hydration that’s free from chemicals and other nasties, filtered water bottles are the way to go. It’s important to note, however, that not all water bottle filters are made equal.

That’s why we’re here to show you just how revolutionary Pure Clear’s water filtration technology is…

      Why water filtration matters

Have you ever gone away on holiday and been unsure if the water is suitable for drinking? The last thing you want when you should be relaxing is to get unwell from dirty water. And perhaps even at home, you have concerns about microplastics and chemicals in your tap water. It might even just be that your local area’s tap water doesn’t have the freshest taste.

If any of these resonate with you, you may benefit from water filtration. While you could opt for a countertop water filter jug at home, it’s not the most convenient option, especially when you want to enjoy filtered water on the go. (Take a look at our guide to what filtered water is for more details on its benefits.)

So what’s the alternative? Our filtered water bottles — in particular, Pure Clear’s advanced filtration system, all packaged up in a handy drinking bottle.

What are filtered water bottles, and how do they work?

Filtered water bottles are a helpful way to enjoy purer water wherever you are. They hold water, just like a standard water bottle, however, they also feature a filter that captures all manner of unwanted elements as you sip.

While all filtered water bottles work on the same basic principle, their technology – and effectiveness – are not always equal.

Most filtered water bottles utilise Ultrafiltration (UF) technology. This means they feature a semi-permeable membrane that filters out particles and contaminants. These membranes typically have pore sizes ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 microns. While these pores certainly are tiny, they are not small enough to capture dissolved salts, viruses, chemical reductions, and trace pharmaceuticals.

If only there were an advanced filter that could remove these microscopic contaminants…

The technology inside a Pure Clear water bottle filter

Pure Clear water bottle filters can do just that.

      Electro-absorptive Filter Technology

Like other filters, ours features a semi-permeable membrane. The difference is that the pore sizes of ours are significantly smaller, allowing them to capture even the tiniest particles.

Another unique feature is an electrical charge. Our filters use a positive electrical charge to attract contaminants to the filter like a magnet.

Then there’s the activated carbon. While some water bottle filters include a separate carbon block to absorb contaminants, we’ve incorporated powder-activated carbon into the filter membrane for even more effective filtration.

What does Pure Clear remove from your water?

A Pure Clear filter can remove the same contaminants as other water filters, including:

      • Bacteria: Tiny living organisms, such as Salmonella and E-Coli
      • Endotoxins: These are toxins released when bacteria break down
      • Cysts: Hard-shelled parasites, also known as protozoa — e.g. Giardia, which can cause stomach issues and dehydration
      • Polysaccharides: Long sugar molecules
      • Colloids: Tiny particles, including clay or organic matter
      • Particulates: Larger particles, such as rust, dirt, or sand
      • Microplastics: Very small pieces of plastic (5mm or smaller). These often come from cosmetics, synthetic clothing, and single-use water bottles
      • Pesticides: Chemicals used on crops to kill pests — they can often end up running into water sources
      • Bad tastes and odours

But that’s not all. Pure Clear Filters also go above and beyond, with the ability to filter out even smaller and more complex contaminants, including:

      • Viruses: Tiny, harmful organisms that can cause health issues. Examples include Norovirus and Hepatitis A
      • Heavy metals: Metals like lead, mercury and arsenic that can build up in your body and become harmful
      • Dissolved salts: This is where salts have been completely dissolved into the water (such as in sea water)
      • Chemical reductions: Diluted chemicals like chlorine, fertilisers, and pesticides
      • Trace pharmaceuticals: From hormonal contraception to painkillers, these can pass through humans and end up in water systems

      Testing and certification

Our filters have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they really can remove all these contaminants. We’re certified by the Biological Consulting Services of North Florida Inc., which confirmed that Pure Clear water filters can remove:

      • More than 99.9999% of bacteria
      • 99.95% to 99.996% of viruses
      • More than 99.9% of cysts

Why choose Pure Clear over other water bottle filter brands?

As you can see, Pure Clear water bottle filters are extremely effective in removing viruses and other contaminants that other filters can’t.

Testing also found that Pure Clear Filters have a flow rate of around 800 ml per minute. This means it can effectively filter a whole drinking glass of water in just 60 seconds. Most filters from other brands can process between 300ml and 600ml per minute.

You’ll also find that our UK-made water bottle filters are cost-effective. A single filter can process 200 litres of water — for most people, this will last a couple of months.

Sustainability is also at the heart of the Pure Clear ethos, and our filter water bottles are designed to be as environmentally friendly as possible. As well as reducing reliance on single-use plastic bottles, a single filter can save the equivalent of 400 single-use water bottles!

We also operate a recycling scheme, so you can send us your used filters for recycling. Send us a batch of six, and we’ll give you a 5% discount on your next purchase of filters

What maintenance does a Pure Clear filtered water bottle need?

With each filter cartridge able to process 200 litres of water, you typically need to replace it every two months – but how can you tell when it’s time for a new one?

There are a few signs to look out for if you can’t quite remember how long your current filter has been in your bottle:

      • The flow rate might slow down
      • Visible dirt or discolouration on the filter membrane
      • A change in water taste or smell (this is usually when the activated carbon has reached capacity)

If you’re likely to be drinking from unknown water sources when out and about, we recommend tracking your water usage so you know when you’re approaching the 200-litre mark. This will ensure you’re never left at risk of drinking water that isn’t properly filtered.

The good news is that it’s super easy to switch out your old filter for a new one. Depending on the exact Pure Clear Filters water bottle you have, you can do this in a few quick steps. The general process is to gently remove the old filter from the filter housing, then push the new filter into it, twisting clockwise.

Before adding your new filter, you’ll need to activate it by placing it into a bowl of water for two minutes or holding it under running water for two minutes.
