Pure Clear was founded by Mike Rushton in the summer of 2022. Mike’s career began when he joined the military over 20 years ago where he learnt many skills including firefighting. Mike was part of ‘Operation Fresco’ a situation where the military took the place of the Fire Brigade when they opted to strike back in 2002. Mike’s role was in the breathing apparatus rescue team (BART) as well as a member of an attending team to road traffic collisions.
It was these skills that shaped Mike’s career as he went on to become one of the Royal Navy’s firefighting crew on type 42 Destroyers and Aircraft Carriers. Mike was forced to leave the military due to injury, but he pursued his interest in breathing apparatus and went on to run a multi-million-pound prison service contract in England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, where he trained prison staff on CSRE (Cell Snatch and Rescue) techniques.

The training was to equip officers with the skills required to remove inmates from their prison cell, when the cell had been set on fire, teaching the staff to deal with the toxins, limited vision and how to wear the specialist respiratory protection all whilst dealing with an inmate and managing their own adrenaline. The experience helped Mike understand the principles of filters and filtration, which led him to be head hunted by a design company that predominantly designed and manufactured filtration and respiratory products.
Mike’s experience and input was key in the design and launch of a variety of respiratory products that are available in the market today. His credibility and experience were called upon by the safety team (whom were all veteran firefighters and experienced survival and rescue experts) of the Bloodhound LSR Project (the land speed record that ran in November 2019 South Africa) where Mike was asked to advise on a specific risk and trained the team on his recommended chemical breathing apparatus before they left for South Africa.
Since then, Mike has advised many national water utility companies regarding operating in confined spaces such as United Utilities, Welsh Water and Wessex Water, trained confined space trainers on emergency escape sets and at the time of this article holds his RPE fit2fit accreditation.
With an advanced understanding of filtration combined with a team of designers (who designed the Armed Forces General Service Respirator known as the GSR) to call upon, Mike set out in reshaping the water filtration industry. The decision to enter the water filtration market was driven and motivated by the price of current brands on the market and their lack of complete filtering functionality, which he could link back to his respiratory filtering experience. Mike couldn’t understand why the brands available were so expensive but only offered minimal filtration levels and prevented beginners and families with little spare income the ability to enjoy water filtration outdoors.
This is why Pure Clear was created, to offer advanced filtration for all, at a price affordable by all.
